FE Report
The revenue income of the Bangladesh Telegraph and Telephone Board (BTTB) marked a significant rise by 16.14 per cent or Tk 352.4 million during the first two months of the current fiscal over that of the corresponding period of the last fiscal.
The government's ongoing drive to check illegal VoIP (voice over internet phone) business and realising of outstanding bills had helped the Board earn increased volume of revenue, an official source said.
Quoting from the latest official figures, the source said the BTTB earned revenue to the tune of over Tk 2.53 billion during the July-August period of the fiscal year (FY) 2007-08 against Tk 2.18 billion in the same period of the FY 2006-07.
The total revenue income of the BTTB was estimated at nearly Tk 12.66 billion during January-August period of the present interim government.
The Board earned revenue amounting to Tk 16.66 billion in the entire FY 2006-07, out of which over Tk 10.47 billion was realised during the last January-June period, the source mentioned.
The source, however, said the BTTB has been working to raise its revenue adding that necessary steps have also been taken to ensure improved services and stop harassing its subscribers.
Meanwhile, the government recently adopted a policy guideline for opening up the VoIP business for the private operators against the backdrop of its illegal operations.
