Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) will celebrate its 60 years of engineering education in Bangladesh tomorrow (Saturday).
The authorities of the university have chalked out a six-month programme to commemorate the historical occasion in a befitting manner.
BUET former vice-chancellor (VC) Wahiduddin Ahmed will be present as the chief guest at the inaugural session of the gala ceremony with the university's incumbent VC AMM Safiullah in the chair.
BUET former VCs, faculty members, alumni and members of engineering profession will also attend the launching ceremony.
VC AMM Safiullah told newsmen at a press conference at BUET Thursday that the key and prime objectives of the celebration are to look at the evolution of engineering education in Bangladesh, review the contribution of their graduates in nation building and development activities along with formulating a strategic plan to elevate BUET as a global institute of excellence in engineering and technology.
The institution started its journey in July of 1947 being upgraded to Ahsanullah Engineering College (AEC) from the earlier Ahsanullah School of Engineering to produce graduate engineers in this region.
Later, the AEC was upgraded to East Pakistan University of Engineering and Technology (EPUET) in 1962 in a bid to meet the growing demand of accelerating national development through higher engineering education and research.
The EPUET became BUET after independence of Bangladesh in 1971.
