Underlining the importance of conservation of nature and raising public awareness for this, Jahangirnagar University (JU) hosted the Butterfly Fair-2023 on the campus on Friday.
With the slogan, 'Urle Akashe Projapiti, Prokriti Pay Notun Goti,' which denotes 'if butterflies fly in the sky, nature gets new momentum', the butterfly fair made the university campus vibrant to the joys of several hundred visitors.
Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Nurul Alam inaugurated the day-long fair at Zahir Raihan Auditorium at 10 am.
A glimpse into the event gave the visitors a day's relief from the hustle and bustle of the busy and noisy city life.
People with their families, relatives, and friends gathered at the fair venue throughout the day and got bewitched with the charming beauty of different types of exotic butterflies.
Fazle Rabbi, a city resident, shared, "Seeing butterflies is rare in the urban jungle. After hearing about the butterfly fair on Facebook, I quickly took my daughters there. They had a great time with puppet shows, singing, and painting."
Md Anwarul Islam, a professor of the Zoology Department at Dhaka University, received the Butterfly Award-2023 for his outstanding contribution to the conservation of environment.
Besides, Zahir Raihan, a Zoology Department student of Chittagong University, was honoured with the Butterfly Young Enthusiast Award for his research on butterfly.
Monwar Hossain, the fair's convener and a professor in the Zoology Department at Jahangirnagar University, stated, "Jahangirnagar University once hosted 110 butterfly species, but urbanisation on campus has led to habitat loss."
