Call for making footpaths, bike lanes friendly for pedestrians

FE REPORT | June 30, 2020 00:00:00

The spread of COVID-19 can be contained if footpaths and bicycle lanes are made friendly for pedestrians, according to the opinions made during a public hearing.

The participants in the online hearing on Sunday said the COVID-19 crisis has brought to the fore the need for more focus on footpath bicycle lanes.

The design of footpaths and introduction of bike lanes were always in the priority in the 20-year policy named 'Strategic Transport Plan (STP)'.

Transport experts, users and students, who joined the hearing, said coronavirus has changed the type of public demand for transport and pressed top priority on pedestrian movement.

Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA), which is responsible for policy, planning and integrating transportation system with all agencies, hosted the event chaired by its executive director Khandakar Rakibur Rahman.

Representatives from Accident Research Institute (ARI), Jatri Kalyan Samity and Work for Better Bangladesh (WBB), among other entities, took part in the talks.

Road Transport Highways Division additional secretary Neelima Akhter and former DTCA executive director and transport expert Dr SM Salehuddin were also present.
