Call for yr-long anti-mosquito campaign

FE REPORT | November 24, 2023 00:00:00

Speakers at a programme on Thursday called for a year-long anti mosquito activities as mosquito-borne diseases, including dengue, prevail in every season.

They said this at the launch of a community-level dengue awareness programme hosted by the National Institute of Preventive and Social Medicine (NIPSOM) at its Mohakhali office.

DNCC mayor Atiqul Islam attended the ceremony as the chief guest, while the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) director general Prof ABM Khurshid Alam, and NIPSOM director Dr Meerjady Sabrina Flora, among others, were present, reads a DNCC statement.

Speaking at the event, Mr Islam said dengue outbreak was no more limited to monsoon only. "Therefore, it necessitates being cautious about dengue throughout the year."

The city authorities have been conducting a campaign as well as legal steps, even office complexes of some government agencies were fined as they were found nonchalant about larvae prevention.

The mayor, however, said it was not the DNCC's intention to fine or jail anybody.

"Our aim is to prevent Aedes larvae from growing anywhere. We want everyone to be aware of their own place. Dengue control will be possible only if everyone in the community is aware."

At the event, Mr Alam said the agencies concerned should conduct a massive campaign to control dengue.

Campaign should be conducted all over the country, he said, adding: "It will be possible to thwart dengue if awareness can be created among all through mass campaigning."

Ms Flora underscored the need for cleaning program of households at least once in a week.

"Aedes mosquito usually can fly up to 200 metres at stretch," she said, adding that cleanliness of home or office premises can help ensure prevention of the dengue and other mosquito-borne diseases.

Following the programme, they joined an awareness rally in Mohakhali and distributed leaflet among the people.
