Rights activists urged Thursday the government to find out the reasons for increasing the incidence of human trafficking in recent times from Bangladesh.
They also demanded punitive action against the human traffickers to help stop such malpractice.
The demands came from a seminar organised at the National Press Club in the city on the occasion of the World Day against Trafficking in Persons 2015.
USAID Bangladesh, Winrock International, United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Plan International, Dhaka Ahsania Mission, Rights Jessore, SHISUK (Shikkha Shastha Unnayan Karzakram), Change Maker, BRAC, WARBE Development Foundation, Bangladesh Ovibashi Mohila Sramik Association (BOMSA), ANIRBAN, Bangladesh Society for the Enforcement of Human Rights and BONGO BD jointly organised the programme.
A signature campaign programme on 'Sign Up to Stop Human Trafficking' was also held to mark the day.
Their other demands include giving approval to the rules of Human Trafficking Deterrence and Suppression Act 2012, creating awareness about human trafficking through television channels, necessary assistance for trafficking victims and necessary allocation in the national budget to help combat human trafficking.
According to the rights organisations, over 20 million people including children and women are smuggled worldwide a year.
Ishrat Shamim, president of Centre for Women and Children Studies, Professor Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah of Dhaka University and Al Amin Nayan, a member of survivor voice, among others, spoke at the programme.
