Call to stop child repression by enforcing tougher law

Family Planning Association of Bangladesh (FPAB) president Prof Khaleda Khanam called for enforcing the existing tougher law to prevent violence against children and women and give deterrent punishment to the perpetrators, said a press release.

She made the appeal while speaking at a human chain organised by FPAB in front of the National Press Club in the city on Thursday.

Prof Khaleda Khanam, former Whip of parliament and prominent lawmaker, regretted that due to slow trial process, weak and poor socio-economic status of women and children and the culture of denial of justice in the country, children and women are becoming victims. The types and dimension of violence against children and women are brutal and inhuman, Prof Khaleda Khanam, also a close aide of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, pointed out.

Dr AFM Matiur Rahman, executive director of FPAB said that ruling Awami League government has earned reputation for its contribution to reducing poverty, maternal and infant mortality but all its good works are going to be shattered by the recent incidents of brutal violence against children. One- third of the total population in Bangladesh is adolescent and youth. He urged the youths to be united to protect their rights.

Honorary secretary general of FPAB Nasir Ahamed Babul urged the government to ensure safety and security of children at home, in schools and in areas of their movement.
