Ahead of the election to the Jahangirnagar University (JU) workers' union, most parts of the campus have been flooded with posters covered with polythene bags, which are, according to experts, harmful for environment and soil.
Experts expressed their concern over the use of unnecessary posters and harmful polythene in daylight which harms fertility of the soil and creates problem for the draining system.
Environmental specialist Prof Dr Khabir Uddin, also a teacher of Environmental Science department, said: "The polythene along with posters being used for publicity of the candidates is harmful for environment and soil."
As the polythene bags are not biodegradable, so they cause loss of fertility of the soil, he added.
Recalling his past experience Mr Khabir also said after the election none manage the polythene which mixes with the soil and drain and create water-logging on the campus.
Another environmental specialist, Prof Dr Saiyad Hafizur Rahman, said: "Due to mismanagement polythene bags have an adverse effect on the environment."
