Cancer is no more a killer disease, rather it can be termed a serious disease. Cancer does not mean inevitable death. The media can play an important role in publicity in this connection and journalists should study in-depth and focus on publishing objective news on cancer.
These were the views expressed by participants at a roundtable on 'Media's Role in Awareness Building on Cancer' jointly organised by Ahsania Mission Cancer Hospital (AMCH) and Bangladesh Journalist Forum on Women and Children Affairs (BJFWCA) at the Dhaka Ahsania Mission (DAM) auditorium in the city Monday, reports BSS.
The discussants said people's idea about cancer in the country is still parochial.
Experts on cancer opined that deaths from cancer could be reduced to 50 per cent, if use of tobacco could be controlled.
Pointing to the AMCH, the journalists opined that they needed patient-friendly hospitals.
Former adviser and The Independent Editor Mahbubul Alam was the chief guest at the roundtable moderated by DAM President Kazi Rafiqul Alam.
Poet and essayist Sheikh Nazrul presented the keynote paper of the conference.
Special guests were Daily Bhorer Kagoj Editor Shyamal Dutta and Daily Samokal Deputy Editor Mozammel Hossain Monzu.
Daily Prothom Alo City Editor Pronab Saha and Daily Jaijaidin News Editor Humayun Sadeq Chowdhury took part in the discussion.
Former secretary and AMCH Managing Director M Fazlur Rahman delivered the address of welcome.
Cancer specialist and AMCH consultant Fazle Elahi and Abdul Hye replied the questions of the media personnel while BJFWC General Secretary and ATN Bangla Senior Reporter Arif Hossain delivered the introductory speech.
A good number of journalists, medical professionals and representatives from Bangladesh scouts and the civil society were present on the occasion.
