CHITTAGONG, Feb 22: Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) has awarded the Ekushey Smarak Sammanana to 12 distinguished personalities in recognition of their contributions in respective fields.
Public Works and Housing Minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain handed over the awards to them at a function organised by CCC marking the International Mother Language Day on Friday.
Of the seven recipients, former minister Abdullah al Noman and former mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury were awarded for their contributions in the War of Liberation and Independence Movement.
The other recipients are Abul Momen in Journalism, Sufi Mizanur Rahman of PHP Group in industries and commerce, Ali Abbas in sports, Abu Taher Sawdagar in social service and Abdul Mabud Sawdagar in education (posthumous).
Awards in different sections of literature goes to Swapan Dutta in poetry, Ferdous Ara Aleem in works written in prose, Fahmida Amin in children's literature, Dr Mohibul Aziz in essays and research and Nasir Uddin in world literature.
Chittagong City Corporation M Manjur Alam in his address said CCC has started honouring the distinguished personalities and it will continue in future.
Speaking at the function, the vice-chancellor of Premier University and the 2014 Ekushey Padak winner Dr Anupam Sen said the CCC should also be awarded as it has long been providing services to the city dwellers.
