CCC councillor jailed, later released

CHITTAGONG, May 28 (UNB): Hours after being sentenced to two years in prison by a mobile court, Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) councillor Mahabubul Alam was released Wednesday afternoon.
Mohammad Azam, CCC councillor from ward-5, said the unexpected incident happened due to misunderstanding between Executive Magistrate Nazia Shirin and Mahabubul Alam. "The misunderstanding has been cleared at a meeting at the Nagar Bhaban," he added.
He said CCC Mayor M Manzur Alam called the executive magistrate to his office where the matter was settled.
Later, Mahabubul Alam, CCC councillor from ward-4, and also the general secretary of Chittagong Brothers Union, was released.
Earlier, on Wednesday morning, the mobile court sentenced him to two years in jail for obstructing its eviction drive in the city.
Mobile court sources said Mahabubul Alam had an altercation with Executive Magistrate Nazia Shirin during an eviction drive in Chandgaon area Tuesday afternoon.
He again obstructed authorities concerned to conduct another eviction drive in the city's Bahaddarhat area at about 11 am Wednesday. Police arrested him at that time.
Later, the mobile court, led by Nazia Shirin, sentenced the CCC councillor to two years' imprisonment.
