CCCI expresses mixed reactions to budget

Chittagong Chamber of Commerce & Industry (CCCI) on Thursday expressed mixed reactions on the proposed budget for the fiscal year 2022-23.
CCCI President Mahbubul Alam said the proposed reduction in corporate tax rate would encourage investment as well as help widen employment opportunities, diversify export and achieve growth.
There was a need for raising the individual tax-free income limit in proportionate with 5.6 per cent inflation, he added.
The CCCI chief also said the proposed budget was a time-befitting one in the wake of the country's economic recovery process in the post-pandemic era along with the war between Russia and Ukraine.
He came up with the instant budget reactions at Bangabandhu Conference Hall at the World Trade Centre in Chattogram, a statement said.
The government will have to spend Tk 731.75 billion on payment of domestic interest, which would result in pressure on the government to implement the budget.
"We believe the government should be aware of the growing debt burden to address the deficit."
The CCCI, however, hailed the proposal for tax rebate by 5 per cent for the business entities on employing physically challenged and third gender people.
The chamber also lauded the proposal for exempting local ships from paying tax.
"The proposal for tax exemption on Bangladeshi flag carriers till 2030 to encourage them will help draw new investment in the sector," he said.
The trade body urged the government to cancel proposed 15 per cent duty on import of toner and printer used with the laptop and desktop as well as 10 per cent duty on import of electronic cash register.
