CHATTOGRAM, June 18: After the construction of connecting roads and feeder roads, work on Coastal Road popularly known as Ring Road will be completed, sources concerned said.
Project Director Engineer Kazi Hasan Bin Shams said, "Now we are working to complete the work of connecting roads. Besides, we are working with the authorities concerned to design an interface. Some changes are also being made to the design of Outer Ring Road. A new feeder road will be constructed at Boropole in Halishahar. Service lanes will be built to connect different roads in the city."
"Due to Karnaphuli tunnel, traffic on this road will increase a lot. So, Ring Road will be turned into eight-lane instead of four-lane," said Kazi Hasan Bin Shams, also Chief Engineer of the Chattogram Development Authority (CDA), the implementing agency of the road project.
After completing the Ring Road project, according to sources in CDA, it will help protect Chattogram Export Processing Zone, Karnaphuli Export Processing Zone, Chittagong port, Shah Amanat International Airport, Naval and Air Force's establishments and other key point installations from natural calamities, including tidal surge and cyclone.
Besides, the volume of traffic will be significantly reduced in Chattogram city and industries especially the tourism industry will flourish after completing the project. CDA is implementing the Tk 14.96-billion Coastal Road Construction and Embankment Strengthening project, also known as Outer Ring Road project.
The project was approved by the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase on March 4 in 2016.
Under the project, a 15.2-kilometre road was constructed on the existing coastal embankment connecting Patenga with Sagorika Industrial Area in the city, sources said.
According to the project, the 14.7-km Outer Ring Road comprised two additional five-km feeder roads and three approach roads connecting with coastal embankment-cum-four-lane highway stretching from Patenga sea beach to Sagorika intersection. Of the two feeder roads, one will be constructed beside Rab-7 office at Katgor and other near Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium at Sagarika. The height of the ring road will be around 31-33 feet.
It may be mentioned that although the project was expected to be completed in 2019, work on two feeder roads and several other roads to be connected with Karnaphuli tunnel still remain incomplete. But the road opened to vehicular movement in 2021.
