Chicken, loose edible oil get pricier ahead of Eid

FE REPORT | March 14, 2026 00:00:00

Chicken prices have increased further in the market ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr amid rising demand as well as falling production, say traders.

Like every year, higher demand has pushed prices up.

Over the past week, chicken prices rose sharply by Tk 30-40 per kg.

Egg prices, which had been declining for several months to a record low, increased slightly by Tk 4.0-5.0 per dozen during the week.

The prices of all types of chicken - broiler, Sonali, Pakistani, layer, and local - increased.

Broiler chicken were sold at Tk 220-240 per kg, while Sonali and layer chicken were sold at Tk 340-360 per kg.

Emdad Ali, a vendor at MohammadpurKrishi Market in the capital, said chicken prices increased by around Tk 20-30 per kg at the farm level over the last one and a half weeks.

Meanwhile, local chicken prices soared further to Tk 700-750 per kg.

The shortage of branded bottled edible oil in the market persisted as buyers often had to check four to five shops to find it, said AbdusSamad, a bank employee in Shyamoli.

The prices of loose soybean oil witnessed a further rise of Tk 4-5 per kg last week and were sold at Tk 180-185 per kg.

The supply of bottled edible oil was lower, though it was retailed at Tk 195 per litre.

The prices of onion declined by Tk 10 per kg, while vegetables, beef, sugar, and lentils remained mostly stable.

Onion was sold at Tk 40-45 a kg on Friday.
