Clash between villagers leaves 50 hurt in Sylhet

SYLHET, Sep 20 (UNB): At least 50 people, including six policemen, were injured in a fierce fight between two groups of villagers at Sridhora village in Bianibazar upazila Friday night.
Witnesses said when Altab Ali (50) of Kosba village went to Sridhora Bazar to buy fish he was locked in an altercation with fish-seller Abdul Jabbar Friday afternoon.
At one stage of the brawl, some people of Sridhora village beat Altab up, leaving him seriously injured. He was rushed to upazila health complex first and later, shifted to Osmani Medical College Hospital.
In a backlash, some people of Kosba village, equipped with lethal arms, attacked the Sridhora villagers that triggered a fierce clash between the people of the two villages.
Some people of Sridhora village set fire to Mokur Ali market of Kosba village and looted valuables from the shop.
In retaliation, Kosba villagers set ablaze some shops at Sridhora bazar.
Bianibazar thana police rushed to the spot at 8pm but failed to bring the situation under control.
On information, firefighters from neighbouring Borolekha upazila of Moulvibazar rushed in and doused the fire.
Later, riot police from the town rushed there at about 11pm and managed to control the violence.
