Coca-Cola Far East Ltd in partnership with Plan Bangladesh launched an innovative 'rain water harvesting and drinking water project' in the country on September 18 to ensure water sustainability and provide safe drinking water in primary schools.
The project includes installation of rain water harvesting (RWH) systems, storage tanks and water filters in five primary schools in the city's Mirpur area and Barguna Sadar Upazila.
The initiative aims at empowering the communities to preserve water and promote access to safe drinking water, as over 11 million children die every year in Bangladesh due to various water-borne diseases.
Coca-Cola and Plan Bangladesh are also partnering to raise awareness among the school children and their families for better water resources management.
The RWH systems will have an overall harvest capacity of about 32.5 million litres of water per annum. The entire project will cost $ 20,000 by September, 2009.
Over 1000 children will be benefited by the initiative with access to potable water throughout the year. In addition, millions of litres of harvested water can also be utilised for secondary purposes like washing and sanitation, a Coca-Cola press release said.
