Compensate Tazreen fire victims immediately

Demands garment workers' body

FE REPORT | November 14, 2019 00:00:00

Jago Bangladesh Garments Shramik Federation on Wednesday demanded that all the victims of the fire incident in Tazreen Fashions factory in Ashulia be immediately compensated and rehabilitated.

Besides, the labour rights body also pressed for meting out exemplarity punishment to those who are responsible for the fire incident.

Coming up with the demand at a press conference in the city, the rights body also announced a protest programme to press home their demand on November 24.

Convener of the Federation Md Baharane Sultan Bahar read out a statement on behalf of the labourers who became victims in the Tazreen fire incident.

The deadly fire incident that occurred in the factory of Tazreen Fashions on November 24, 2012 claimed lives of at least 113 labourers and injured 200 others, read the statement.

A good number of organisations, including local and foreign NGOs, banks and financial institutions, the labour ministry and BGMEA assured of giving support to the victims shortly after the fatal incident had taken place.

The Prime Minister had also announced providing necessary help and handing down punishment to those involved in the incident, also read the statement.

But, it is unfortunate that only a small number of victims received Tk 50,000 as financial aid and the accused people are still at large, said Sultan Bahar quoting the statement.

About 200 victim labourers with physical disability are still passing days without any help or compensation, and they have urged Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to take their miseries into consideration and provide necessary help accordingly.

The rights body said some 172 victim labours have received financial support from ILO since June, 2016.

Besides, 173 injured victims also have received medical treatment from other organisations.

Sixteen buyers including Wallmart, Zaru, KK buyer, CNA, Linkin, GAP and Acland announced to provide compensation but the victim labourers have not got anything from them.

BGMEA provides compensation to a handful of victims and most of the injured victims are ignored.

Besides, a few local NGOs and the owner of Tazreen Fashions Limited did not keep their promise of providing compensation to the victims, the rights body alleged.
