Condolences pour in for Gaffar Chowdhury

Zakiuddin reminisces about eventful DU life with him

People from different quarters have been expressing condolences on the demise of eminent journalist and columnist Abdul Gaffar Chowdhury.

"Whenever I listen to the everlasting song 'Amar Bhaier Rokte Rangano', it reminds me no one but the name of great storyteller our favourite Gaffar Bhai," said Zakiuddin Ahmed on Friday, in an emotional commemoration of the late journalist.

Zakiuddin Ahmed is a director of International Publications Limited (IPL), the owning company of The Financial Express, who spent cherished moments with Mr Chowdhury while studying at the University of Dhaka.

Mr Chowdhury, best known for writing the famous lyrics to the song 'Amar Bhaier Rokte Rangano Ekushey February' - a tribute to the martyrs of the 1952 Language Movement, passed away on Thursday last at the age of 88.

He died of cardiac arrest at a hospital in London, UK, at around 6:50 am (London time) on the day, confirmed by the Bangladesh High Commission in London.

"Me and my long-standing friend Mosharraf Hossain had a very intimate relation with Abdul Gaffar Chowdhury since the beginning of our university years," Mr Zakiuddin said in a statement on Friday.

M Mosharraf Hossain, died in August 18, 2014, was also a director of International Publications Limited (IPL), who was also a former president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA).

Remembering their moments with Mr Chowdhury, Mr Zakiuddin said, "Despite differences in our ideologies, the relation was beyond any belief."

"We always got his company in our social life, during happiness and even in the time crisis," he said.

"He also enquired our circumstances even during the turbulent time of the Liberation War when Pakistan launched crackdown in Bangladesh in 1971," he added.
