Couple gets life in prison for killing daughter in Barisal

BARISAL, Jun 30 (UNB): A court sentenced Monday a couple to life imprisonment for killing 29-day-old daughter in 2010.

The convicts are Sukharanjan Mistri and his wife Arati Rani Mistri of Adhuna village in Gournadi Upazila of the district. They were tried in absentia.

The court also fined them Tk 5,000 and Tk 1,000 each on two counts, in default, to suffer one more year and one month in prison respectively.

According to the prosecution, Arati Rani on June 4, 2010 claimed that their 29-day-old daughter went missing.

On information, police rushed in and recovered the body of the neonatal girl from the septic tank of their toilet after a hectic search.

Sub-inspector (SI) Shahjalal Khalifa filed a case against the parents of the victims.

After examining the records and 11 witnesses, Additional Session's Judge Matiar Rahman delivered the judgment.
