FE REPORT | January 23, 2025 00:00:00

A Dhaka court on Wednesday ordered the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to confiscate a three-bedroom flat and a five-bedroom villa in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), belonging to former Padma Bank chairman Chowdhury Nafeez Sarafat.

Judge Md Zakir Hossain of Metropolitan Senior Special Judge's Court in Dhaka, passed the order after hearing a petition ACC filed seeking necessary order.

Earlier on the day, ACC Deputy Director Md Masudur Rahman, who is the head of an enquiry team, submitted an application in this regard.

ACC Public Prosecutor Mir Ahmed Ali Salam, who moved the application on behalf of the anti-graft body, confirmed the court order to the FE.

In the petition, the ACC said Nafeez Sarafat purchased the flat and the villa in Dubai by laundering money.

The ACC petition further said no citizen has scope to transfer money abroad without Bangladesh Bank's proper permission. But, Nafeez Sarafat did not take any permission from the central bank to launder money abroad.

Nafeez Sarafat did not even mention the properties of Dubai in his income tax documents as he purchased those properties with assets achieved through "unfair way", the ACC claimed.

According to published report, Nafeez Sarafat's two properties in Dubai are worth at least Tk 104 million, with the three-bedroom flat located in the Burj Khalifa neighbourhood and the five-bedroom villa being located in the Damac Hills neighbourhood.
