Speakers at a roundtable on Saturday called upon the government to create necessary employment opportunities for marginal people to help combat human trafficking.
They also called for punishing the human smugglers and rooting out their circle.
The call came at the roundtable on 'Action against Human Trafficking' jointly organised by the Bhorer Kagoj and Debate for Democracy at the Dhaka Reporters Unity.
They also urged the authorities concerned to increase diplomatic initiatives with foreign countries for enhancement of overseas employment. It would help reduce illegal migration, they said.
State Minister for Labour and Employment Mujibul Haq Chunnu was the chief guest and Chairman of Debate for Democracy Hassan Ahmed Chowdhury Kiron moderated the programme.
The state minister said the government had already taken necessary steps to check human smuggling. It had already ordered the departments and law enforcers concerned to go for strong vigilance.
Editor of the Daily Bhorer Kagoj Shyamal Dutta said all the related countries would have to come forward to resolve the crisis as human smuggling is an international issue.
President of Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) Mujahidul Islam Selim pointed out the country's unemployment situation as a reason for the increase in human trafficking. He also criticised the government's improper initiatives to rein in human smugglers.
Bangladeshi Ovibashi Mohila Sramik Association (BOMSA) project director Sumaya Islam called for detecting the syndicates of human traffickers and eliminating them so that poor people may remain safe from their temptation.
Professor of International Relations of Dhaka University Delwar Hossain, Refugee and Migratory Movements Research Unit (RMMRU) Research Fellow Jalal Uddin Sikder and Ovibashi Karmi Unnayan Programme (OKUP) Chairman Shakirul Islam, among others, were present at the programme.
