'Criminal' dies in Cox's Bazar 'gunfight'

COX'S BAZAR, Feb 05 (UNB): A man, accused in several cases, was killed in a reported gunfight between two gangs in the hilly area of Shaplar Ful Union of Maheshkhali Upazila early Tuesday.
Police identified the deceased as Shahabuddin, 25, son of Abdur Rahim, a resident of Nunchhari village in Kolmarchhora Union.
A police team went to the area in the morning after learning about the gunfight and recovered the body, said Probash Chandra Dhar, officer-in-charge of Maheshkhali Police Station.
Four firearms were also recovered from the site of the gunfight, he said.
Shahabuddin was accused in a number of criminal cases, the OC added.
Meanwhile, a suspected drug trader sustained bullet injuries in an alleged gunfight with police at Chatiani Paschimpara of Pabna Sadar Upazila early Tuesday.
The injured is Apple Sheikh, 42, son of Somsher Sheikh. He is accused in nine drugs-related cases, police said.
Gautam Kumar Biswas, additional superintendent of Pabna police, said they raided the area after being tipped off about a drug deal.
"As soon our team reached the spot, the drug traders opened fire, triggering a skirmish," he said.
Apple, injured in the gunfight, was arrested and taken to Pabna General Hospital, the police officer said.
A pistol, a magazine, eight bullets, a machete and five grams of heroin were found with him. Three policemen were also injured in the gunfight, Gautam said.
