CHATTOGRAM, May 6: The Chittagong Customs House (CCH) seized a container and sealed it off for importing cigarettes under false declaration today.

The officers of the AIR (Audit, Investigation and Research) of the CCH on a tip off found the brands of Benson & Hedges, Black and Dunhill imported from Singapore at the yard of the Chattogram Port's New Mooring Container Terminal this noon.

They conducted physical examination of the 40-feet long container (equal to two TEUs - 20-feet equivalent units) and found the cigarettes without statutory warning on the packets which is mandatory.

Besides, the government has imposed 450 per cent duty on the price of cigarettes and it is assumed by the CCH that the importer wanted to evade taxes of the item, the market value of which is about Tk 100 million, said Deputy Commissioner of the CCH Md Nur Uddin Milon.
