Ctg students paying excess money to secondary schools

CHITTAGONG, Aug 17: A large amount of money worth around Tk. 50 million is realised annually from the students studying in Secondary Schools located at different parts of the Chittagong City area without mentioning any specific purpose. This money is collected when students fill their forms and the amount ranges between Tk. 590 and Tk. 1200 each.
It was disclosed in an opinion sharing meeting arranged by the "Shocheton Nagarik Commi-ttee" (SNC) Chittagong City Chapter at Chittagong Press Club yesterday.
SNC and Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) jointly conducted a survey over the stated issue and complied the report.
According to the survey report, the number of secondary schools in Chittagong City Corporation area is 150 of which, government, City Corporation and privately managed institutions are 9, 41 and 100 respectively.
The survey revealed that different kinds of fees are realised from the students at the secondary level. These are admission fee, tution fee, examination fee, electricity bill, coaching fee, etc.
Besides that, about Tk. 50 million is realised without mentioning any specific purpose.
On an average, Tk. 79 is realised in excess from each student at the time of registration in the Secondary Schools. Wide ranging irregularities are reported to take place in appointing members in school managing committee, the survey mentioned.
With a view to restoring discipline and healthy academic atmosphere in the educational institutions, the SNC and TIB, jointly conducted the survey and made a number of recommendations which include arranging opinion sharing with the guardians of the student after every 2 month, imparting proper training to the teachers, refraining from realising fees whimsically, removing irregularity in appointing members in school managing committee, modernisng the mode of teaching, employment of adequate teachers in the institutions etc.
The survey report was presented by the Research Supervisor ZM Wahidul Alam while the opinion sharing meeting was presided by Begum Mustari Shafi.
