CHATTOGRAM, March 05: Chattogram WASA is going to supply a total of 500 million liters of water per day from the current month as the second project of Sheikh Hasina Water Treatment Plant is likely to be inaugurated by the Prime Minister this month.

Sources said work on the second project of Sheikh Hasina Water Treatment Plant to supply 143 million litres per day (MLD) of water has already been completed.

Trial operation of the water purification plant is now underway.

Production of the water treatment plant is likely to be inaugurated on March 17, marking the birthday of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the project virtually on the day.

Sources said Chattogram WASA is now supplying 260 million litres of water per day to the city dwellers while the authorities can ensure water supply of 500 million litres per day from the current month after the Sheikh Hasina Water Treatment Plant starts functioning.

Karnaphuli Water Supply Project was renamed as Sheikh Hasina Water Treatment Plant after completion of the project in 2017 last.

Later, the authorities took up the second project which has been completed now and is waiting for the inauguration.

Chattogram WASA initiated the new project to ensure uninterrupted supply of purified water from the Karnaphuli River.

Under the project, a water treatment plant with the capacity of 143 million liters per day has already been set up in the port city along with installation of supply and distribution pipeline.

Chattogram WASA was entrusted with the responsibility of implementing the project in the city and Rangunia areas.

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) has already approved the project involving Tk4,491 crore.

Of the total project cost, the government provided Tk844 crore from the national exchequer while Chattogram WASA arranged Tk 23 crore from its own source and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) provided Tk 3,623 crore as project assistance.
