CHATTOGRAM, July 03: The Students of Chittagong University (CU) blocked the Chattogram-Hathazari Highway on Wednesday, demanding cancellation of quota system in the government jobs and retention of the merit-based recruitment circular of 2018.

As a result, vehicular movements on the Chattogram-Hathazari Highway remained suspended for around two hours, creating traffic congestion and causing public sufferings.

The aggrieved students held a sit-in programme at the CU Central Shaheed Minar in the morning. Later, they came to the university gate number-1 and blocked the highway at around 12:00 pm. They withdrew the blockade at around 2:00 pm and returned to the campus.

The students also held a rally under the banner of 'Anti-discrimination Student Movement'. Hundreds of general students joined the rally, chanting slogans to fight against the quota system.

The students demanded that a commission should be constituted as soon as possible to eliminate the 'unreasonable and discriminatory' quota system in the government jobs (all grades). Besides, only the people of backward and disadvantaged groups can be considered for quotas as per the constitution, they added.

The students said they would again organise a sit-in programme and rally at the CU Shaheed Minar and block the highway on Thursday, if their demands are not met.
