CHITTAGONG, Aug 9: Teachers of Chittagong University (CU) observed full-day work abstention on Sunday demanding introduction of a separate salary structure for the university teachers.
They also said that the proposed 8th national pay scale should be re-fixed. No classes were held in any department or institute of the CU during the programme. All teachers spontaneously participated in it, a CUTA (Chittagong University Teachers Association) statement said.
The statement signed by general secretary of CUTA Dr Kazi SM Khosrul Alam Quddusi said some proposals made in the 8th national pay scale dented the prestige of the teachers. So they should be corrected; otherwise the teachers would not accept it.
Teachers of the university earlier in a meeting opposed the discriminatory and derogatory proposals in the pay scale. The CUTA meeting was held on August 5 last, he said adding that tougher programmes would be launched, if their legitimate demands were not met.
The teachers have been observing different protest programmes at the CU Intellectuals Square for the last 75 days.
