CHITTAGONG, Sept 18: Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) has announced its full panel for the Chittagong University Central Students' Union (CUCSU) elections, which will be held after 35 years. JCD Central Committee General Secretary Nasir Uddin announced the panel at a press conference on the campus on Thursday afternoon.
The student wing of BNP has nominated Sajjad Hossain Hridoy, the organising secretary of its CU unit, as the candidate for vice-president (VP) post.
The candidate for general secretary (GS) is Shafayet Hossain, and for assistant general secretary (AGS) Ayubur Rahman Toufiq.
Nasir Uddin said they have not received the "expected cooperation" from the CU administration over the election. The "severely politicized" administration is showing a "biased attitude" towards a specific organization.
Talking with The Financial Express, Chief Election Commissioner Professor Dr Monir Uddin said, "We will present a good CUCSU election. I hope all will cooperate with us for holding free and fair polls."
Meanwhile, the CU campus is now in a festive mood ahead of the polls. Students are discussing about the elections everywhere on the campus. Heated debates are also taking place regarding the prospective leaders and the nature of campus politics.
A total of 1,162 forms have been collected so far. Of these, 528 forms are for the CUCSU election and 634 forms are for the hall unions. Of them, 371 nomination papers have already been submitted. In total, 232 posts are up for contest in the upcoming elections, of which 28 are in CUCSU, and 204 in 14 halls and one hostel.
The elections will take place on October 12 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. The preliminary list of candidates will be published on September 21. Campaign of the candidates will begin on Sep 25, when the final list will be published. It will continue until 24 hours before the polling begins. The contestants will be allowed to campaign for 12 hours from 10:00 am barring megaphone use after 9:00 pm.
This year, the candidates must undergo dope tests, with any positive result leading to disqualification.
