With the slogan 'Dipto Shikha Joluk Shilpo Torutole', a five-day cultural festival began at Jahangirnagar University (JU) Friday amid festivity and fanfare.
Jolshiri, a leading cultural organisation of the campus, has organised the festival with a view to increasing the public awareness about the indigenous culture among the people.
Members and well-wishers of the organisation brought out a colourful procession that paraded the main streets of the campus and ended at the Selim Al Din Mukta Mancha.
Organisers say the programmes will take place in the evenings at the Selim Al Din Mukta Mancha.
The play 'dui je cilo ak chakor' was staged in the first day of the festival while noted singer Ostad Shadad Hossain will perform in the second day.
Different kinds of cultural programmes will be held during the festival that will end on March 25 through staging the play 'Shobdobrikkho' performed by Jolshiri.
Abdul Jabbar Topu, general secretary of the organisation, said, the main motto of the festival is "to create the public interest and awareness about our native culture."
Most of the people of our country are showing their interest in the western culture, neglecting the local culture, he added.
