Death anniversary of Youssouf Ali tomorrow

The ninth death anniversary of Dr M Youssouf Ali, a fisheries biologist, policy maker, administrator and advocate for protecting the open water fishery resources, will be observed tomorrow (Thursday).
To mark the occasion a Milad mahfil will be held at Khankaye Toazia, 27 Pir Toazuddin Garden at Siddheswari Road in the city today (Wednesday).
Youssouf Ali first pioneered the artificial breeding of major carp fishes, which was instrumental in the expansion of aquaculture in Bangladesh.
He died in Dhaka on July 31, 1999. Later, he was buried at the Banani Graveyard in the city.
As a young officer, he joined the Department of Fisheries, Government of Bengal in 1945.
Later, he obtained MS and PhD degrees from the Institute of Fisheries, University of British Columbia, Canada.
He played a key role as a researcher, technocrat, and environmental activist for about 50 years.
He held important positions in the government ending his service career as Secretary, Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock.
