The government has reconstructed the delta governance council to facilitate sustaining economic growth as well as enhancing productivity and climate resilience through ensuring implementation of Bangladesh Delta Plan 2100, sources said.

They said the 15-member council, led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, incorporated three new members - Ministers of LGRD and Co-operatives and Foreign Affairs, and State Minister for Planning.

The Cabinet Division issued a notification on September 13, announcing the new council and its scope of work.

The council will formulate policy, provide strategic recommendations and take decisions to implement the Delta Plan, according to the notification.

It would also take required measures to revise the Plan, formulate an investment plan and form a fund for smooth implementation of the 100-year plan.

The committee will sit at least once a year while it can co-adopt any member if needed.

The delta governance council formed on July 01, 2020 was also cancelled, added the notification.

Earlier, the government on September 04, 2018 approved the plan to secure the future of water resources and mitigate the likely effects of climate change and natural disasters.

The Bangladesh Delta Plan (BDP) 2100 is a broad-based long-term vision about the likely changes and necessary intervention to make the Bangladesh Delta safe by the end of the 21st century, sources said.

The BDP lays out holistic and cross-sectoral action needed to improve productivity and minimise disaster risks.

The BDP seeks to integrate the medium to long term aspirations of the country to achieve upper middle-income status and eliminate extreme poverty by 2030 and become a prosperous country by 2041, they added.

The BDP also has six specific goals that contribute to achieving these three high-level goals, they said.

The specific goals included ensure safety from floods and climate change related disasters, enhance water security and efficiency of water usages and, ensure sustainable and integrated river systems and estuaries management.

Conserving and preserving wetlands and ecosystems, developing effective institutions and equitable governance for in-country and trans-boundary water resources management and achieving optimal and integrated use of land and water resources are also included, according to the BDP.
