Two more people died from dengue, and 53 people were hospitalised with the viral infection in the last 24 hours ending at 8:00 am on Sunday as cases are creeping up again in Bangladesh.
The country's first death this year from the mosquito-borne disease was reported nearly one month back on June 21.
An official at the Health Emergency Operation Center & Control Room of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) told the FE that the report of the latest fatalities from the vector-borne disease came from the country's southern-most Cox's Bazar district.
However, the DGHS official could not give further details about the two deceased.
Of the latest 53 new dengue infection cases, 18 were reported from outside the Dhaka division, according to the DGHS. The rest 35 cases occurred in Dhaka division.
A total of 170 patients infected with the deadly disease were receiving treatment at 47 public and private hospitals or healthcare facilities in the capital as of Sunday morning.
Some 222 patients in public and private hospitals across the country were getting treatment till that time, the DGHS data reveals.
As many as 1,723 patients have been admitted to different hospitals in the country with dengue from January 1, 2022, to July 17, 2022, the report said.
UNB adds: dengue situation in the country is still under control this year due to combined efforts of the ministry, city mayors and people, said LGRD Minister Md Tazul Islam on Sunday.
"In the last two or three years, many people were infected with dengue and unfortunately some of them died. But overall, we were and still are in a good position compared to other countries, including Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam and the Philippines," he said.
He was speaking at a programme 'Launching of 2020 Global State of World Volunteerism Report: Strengthening volunteerism towards inclusive, balanced societies and support to SDGs in Bangladesh' at Public Health Engineering Department in the city.
