FE REPORT

To make it easier for the people in Dhaka to buy sacrificial animals for Eid-ul-Azha, the two city corporations decided to set up 25 temporary cattle markets where traders and farmers from different parts of the country could bring their livestock.

Subject to moon sighting, Eid-ul-Azha is expected to be observed on May 27 or 28 this year.

To meet the demand, the two Dhaka city corporations have floated tenders for 25 temporary cattle markets so far.

The Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) is making arrangements to set up 13 cattle markets, said Mohammad Mobashsher Hasan, chief estate officer at the DSCC.

He said the DSCC announced tenders for 13 locations so far, including Shahjahanpur, Postogola, Donia, Dholaikhal, Hazaribagh, Kamalapur,

Meradia, Shyampur, Lalbagh and Kamrangirchar.

The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) invited tenders for 12 locations including Khilkhet, Mirpur, Uttara, Badda, Mohammadpur, Bhatara and, said DNCC's chief estate officer Mohammad Shawkat Osman.

However, the authorities are still considering whether to allow a market in Aftabnagar due to boundary issues, environmental concerns, and possible public inconvenience.

Last year, the market there was cancelled due to local protests and a court order.

Cattle would also be sold at the permanent cattle markets in Gabtoli (under DNCC) and Sarulia in Demra (under DSCC).

All markets will operate for five days, including the Eid day, said Osman.

He said waste inside the cattle markets must be collected and kept at specific places, and the city corporation will remove it.

Cleaning work, including removing bamboo structures, will start from 12 pm on the day after Eid.
