DMP bans heavy vehicles for Eid

With millions expected to leave Dhaka ahead of Eid-ul-Azha, the police authorities have announced sweeping traffic restrictions, including a temporary ban on heavy vehicles and one-way movement on key highways, in an effort to reduce congestion and maintain orderly travel during the holiday rush.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has imposed a six-day restriction on the movement of trucks, covered vans and lorries on highways to ensure smoother Eid travel and ease congestion around cattle markets ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.
According to a notification signed by DMP Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed, the restrictions will be enforced in two phases - May 25-27 and May 29-31 - covering a total of six days.
The DMP said during the Eid, more than 10 million people are expected to leave the capital, while around three million are likely to enter Dhaka, putting heavy pressure on the city's road network.
The measures have been introduced to maintain traffic discipline during the holiday rush and manage congestion around cattle markets.
The notification stated that the restrictions would not apply to vehicles carrying cattle, perishable food items, daily essentials, garments, medicines, fertilisers and fuel.
The DMP also said that unfit or unregistered buses would not be allowed to operate during the period.
Inter-district buses must pick up passengers only from designated terminals and travel directly to their destinations, while roadside passenger pick-up and drop-off have been prohibited.
To manage congestion, several major roads will operate under a one-way system on May 25, 26 and 27.
The Abdullahpur-Kamarpara-Dhour Bridge route will remain exclusively open for outbound traffic from Dhaka, while incoming vehicles will be diverted through alternative routes.
Similarly, on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway, the Airport-Gazipur section under the BRT corridor will also operate as a one-way route, allowing only outbound traffic from the capital.
The DMP has urged commuters to avoid several major routes unless necessary. These include the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway from Banani to Abdullahpur, the Dhaka-Chattogram highway from Jatrabari to Signboard, Mirpur Road from Shyamoli to Gabtoli, the Dhaka-Keraniganj road from Fulbaria to Babubazar Bridge, and the Abdullahpur-Dhour Bridge road.
The police have also issued strict instructions regarding cattle markets, stating that the buying, selling, loading or unloading of livestock outside designated areas will not be allowed.
