The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) would launch an operation within a day or two to arrest extortionists in an attempt to bring down essential commodity prices, said DMP Commissioner Sheikh Sajjad Ali on Saturday.
The prices of essential commodities have been persistently rising day by day due to extortions, he said in a view-exchange meeting with students and people of Ramna Model Police Station area at the Institution of Diploma Engineers in the capital's Kakrail area.
"We are preparing a list of the extortionists and will start an operation within a very short time to clamp down on extortion," he warned.
"Those, who commit extortion, wouldn't be spared," the DMP chief said.
About eviction of hawkers from footpaths he said, "It is not possible to evict hawkers from footpaths overnight."
He, however, called upon the hawkers to show restraint while trading on roads and footpaths.
