FE Report | November 22, 2019 00:00:00

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) will conduct a cleanliness drive and destroy larvae at 626 hotspots of Culex mosquito in its 54 wards for 10 days.

DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam inaugurated the drive titled 'Cleanliness for Mosquito Control' at Iqbal Road of the city's Mohammadpur on Thursday.

The mayor warned of taking legal action against the officials concerned of both public and private offices if they fail to keep the ponds, water bodies, swamps and canals clean as per the directives of DNCC.

DNCC has already sent letters to Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (DWASA) and Rajuk in this regard. DNCC will also hold talks with the department heads.

Earlier, an expert team of 12 entomologists, led by Dr Manzur Ahmed Chowdhury, conducted a survey to identify the hotspots of Culex mosquito in 54 wards of DNCC.

While speaking at the inaugural ceremony, Atiqul Islam also said the drive to control Culex mosquito is part of the ongoing combing operation to control Aedes mosquito.

"We have procured modern fourth-generation equipment for mosquito control in consultation with the entomologists. Of those, 20 are mixed blower by which insecticide can be sprayed to kill larvae and eggs inside the drains," he said.

Besides, two vehicle-mounted fogger machines have been imported to kill adulticides, the mayor said, adding that three more will be imported. He requested the citizens not to litter things indiscriminately as Culex mosquitoes breed mostly in drains and water bodies that are filled with waste outside homes.

He also called upon all the government and private offices to keep their own areas clean and free the ponds and water bodies from hyacinth.
