Torrential rain for 20 minutes is enough to create havoc as different areas of the city go under water due to drainage problem and lack of inadequate rain water retention area around the city.
The water-logging problem has particularly become a severe one for Mirpur as all the water bodies and lakes including Baunia and Bhashantek Bills are being grabbed and filled up by public and private companies, individuals and local political leaders.
Besides, the culverts of WASA are being blocked and canals are either useless or grabbed by individuals or various companies making Mirpur remain water-logged for at least eight hours stretching from Mirpur 12 to Shewrapara.
Against the backdrop, the new mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Annisul Huq made a sudden visit in Mirpur along with DWASA managing director Taqsem A Khan on Wednesday.
During the visit, the city mayor requested Dhaka WASA MD to solve the water-logging problem of Mirpur area permanently within one year.
He also asked the councillors of wards concerned to remove all the illegal structures on the WASA canals with the help of the local people and requested the WASA authority to prepare the actual design of the canals on an emergency basis.
The mayor visited different parts of Mirpur like Baishteki, Ali Hossain Road, Block D of Section 10, Paris Road, Jhoot Patti etc.
The mayor also instructed the relevant DNCC officials and councillors to identify the root causes of the long-standing and worsening water-logging problem in the area.
The WASA MD assured the DNCC mayor of acting as per the suggestion of the mayor.
Mr Huq reiterated his commitment to solve the water-logging problem in all the DNCC areas with the coordinated effort of DNCC, local councillors, district administration and DWASA. msshova@gmail.com
