The Directorate of National Consumers Rights Protection (DNCRP) will form committees at the union level during the current month aiming to make consumers conscious about their rights, official said.

In this regard the DNCRP will issue circular shortly to form the committees at the union level. Earlier, the DNCRP has completed committees at upazila level.

"We have formed committees at upazila level. We are going to form committees at the union level in December 2013 so that the consumers at the grassroots level could understand about their rights," Director General (DG) of the Directorate of the DNCRP Md Abul Hossain Mian told the FE.

He said the upazila chairman is the head of the committee while upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) is the member secretary.

Besides, officials of different government departments at upazila and principal of a college or headmaster of a high school located at the upazila will also be in the committee.

If any upazila is located under Pourashava then the number of committee members will be 18. And if the upazila is not located under Pourashava then the number of the committee members will be 17.

The DNCRP was formed under National Consumers Rights Protection Act 2009.

Except the weekend, the DNCRP conducts regular drives at different shops and markets across the country to stem unscrupulous traders from making windfall profit by depriving the consumers through food adulteration and weight manipulation.
