Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina asked the authorities concerned on Tuesday to strictly monitor so that overloaded trucks and other vehicles cannot ply the roads, reports UNB.
Stressing the importance of properly maintaining the country's roads and highways, the PM gave the directive while formally inaugurating two highways, one road and one bridge in different parts of the country through a videoconferencing from her official residence Ganabhaban in the city.
The newly-completed development projects are a 16-km long road upgraded to a four-lane highway in the divisional city of Rangpur, newly-constructed 10.50-km long Birulia-Ashulia highway and Birulia bridge and the long-awaited Thanchi-Alikadam road under Bandarban district constructed at about 3500 feet height from the sea level.
During the videoconference with Dhaka Divisional Commissioner's office, the PM said with the inauguration of the newly-constructed Birulia-Ashulia highway and Ashulia bridge, the road communication from Dhaka to respective areas would be eased removing traffic jam significantly.
She said steps have been taken to upgrade other highways, including Dhaka-Mymensingh highway, to four-lane ones to ensure improved communication system in the country.
While talking to Bandarban Deputy Commissioner's office through the videoconferencing, the PM said construction of Thanchi-Alikadam highway in the remotest area of the country had been possible with the sincere efforts of the Bangladesh Army.
The construction of the highway might have not been possible had the Bangladesh Army not been involved in the project as it has been built in one of the most remote, highest height and hilly areas of the country.
In this connection, she recalled the signing of the CHT peace treaty in 1997 that paved the way for developing the hilly region. She hoped that the Thanchi-Alikadam road will play a very significant role in easing road communication and transportation of local products.
Sheikh Hasina mentioned that soon after signing of the CHT Peace treaty, her government undertook massive projects for the development of roads, bridges and other infrastructures of the region.
