'Drug trader' dies in Shariatpur 'gunfight

SHARIATPUR, Sept 04 (UNB): A suspected drug trader was killed in a reported gunfight with detectives in Chhoygaon village of Sadar upazila early Tuesday.

The deceased is Md Sumon Pahar, an accused in 11 cases including drug and extortion.

Md Azhar Ali, officer-in-charge of Detective Branch of Shariatpur police, said a team led by him conducted a drive in the village around 2:30 am.

When the team reached there the gang hurled crude bombs and opened fire on them. In retaliation, the law enforcers fired back, triggering a gunfight.

After the gunfight, police rescued Sumon with bullet injuries.

Later, he was rushed to Sadar Hospital where the duty doctors declared him dead, police said.

Police recovered 51 Yaba tablets, 1.0 kg hemp, 06 crude bombs and a motorcycle from the spot.

Three policemen were also injured, said the OC.
