DSCC announces Tk 36.31b budget giving priority to mosquito control

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) announced a mid-term five year communicable disease control and research project as part of its mosquito control programme while placing Tk 36.31 billion budget for the FY 2019-20.

DSCC Mayor Sayeed Khokon on Sunday placed the budget at a press briefing at the Nagar Bhaban in the city. The revised budget for the FY 2018-19 was Tk 19.02 billion. The proposed budget for the FY 2018-19 was Tk 35.99 billion. Total income of the annual budget includes collection from own sources -- Tk 9.72 billion, and Tk 24.49 billion from government and foreign sources. Expenditures include Tk 28.95 billion for development purposes, and Tk 6.29 billion as operation cost.

"Dengue outbreak has started to become under control with the relentless activities of the citizens, councillors and others and logical criticism of the media. We are going to undertake a five-year mosquito control project titled Communicable Disease Control and Research to continue our dengue control activities round the year," said Mayor Khokon.

He said that the allocation of Tk 430 million for mosquito control activities in this budget is higher than any year.

Last year, the proposed allocation for mosquito control was Tk 260 million which was finally Tk 195 million in the revised budget.

Mr Khokon said that Tk 8.97 billion has been allocated for road and traffic infrastructure maintenance and development.

The mayor said that Tk 1.0 billion has been spent in the past two months for the salaries and other expenses without budget approval. DSCC could not announce its budget in time which was scheduled on July 16. DSCC board has approved the amount in the budget, he added.

The mayor said that Tk 3.50 billion would be earned from holding tax. The target was Tk 3.30 billion last year but ended up earning Tk 2.12 billion.

DSCC allocated Tk 444 million as welfare expenditure which was Tk 202 million in the revised budget. A total of Tk 5.27 billion was allocated for development and maintenance, Tk 1.52 billion for environment development (Tk 30 million for public toilet construction and Tk 984 million for landfill development and maintenance), Tk 150 million for repairing of the banks of Buriganga river, Tk 200 million for special programmes for observing Mujib Year, Tk 150 million special development project, Tk 5.15 billion for land acquisition and development, Tk 2.01 billion as matching fund for the ongoing projects, Tk 2.0 billion for construction of new markets, Tk 450 million for construction of slaughter house, Tk 757 million for construction of quarters for the cleaners, and Tk 125 million for special measures for waste management.
