Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) recently inked a deal with Directorate General of Nursing and Midwifery (DGNM) to ensure implementation of midwifery-led sexual and reproductive health services in selected urban health centers, according to a press release.
Md. Zahirul Islam, DSCC chief executive officer (CEO), and Md. Anwar Hossain Akand, director general (joint secretary), DGNM, signed the memorandum of understanding (MoU) at Nagar Bhaban on Wednesday.
This agreement, an initiative by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency and with the participation of Jhpiego Bangladesh, is being considered a groundbreaking step in providing urban healthcare in Dhaka, the press statement says.
The DGNM will ensure technical guidance, training, workshops and professional development opportunities for midwives in urban health centers.
In addition,it will also help create permanent posts for midwives as per national policies.
On the other hand, DSCC will provide the necessary infrastructure, medical equipment and administrative support to involve midwives in urban healthcare.
The DSCC CEO said, "This MoU has opened a new horizon in protecting the health of mothers and newborns and reducing maternal and child mortality."
DSCC is committed to expanding normal delivery and maternity services in the city corporation area and ensuring reproductive health services at the marginal level.
UNFPA Bangladesh Representative Dr. Abu Sayed Mohammad Hasan said that this partnership is considered an important step in providing sustainable and high-quality sexual and reproductive health services in Dhaka South City and will be helpful in achieving sustainable development goals.
DSCC Secretary Muhammad Shafiqul Islam, Chief Health Officer (Sr.) Dr. Nishat Parveen, and representatives of DGNM, UNFPA, Jhpiego, various development partners, national and international NGOs were present at the MoU signing ceremony.
