Dhaka University (DU) authorities have turned down the demand of private medical and dental colleges to relax admission criteria for its affiliated colleges.
The university's administration issued on Wednesday a fresh directive, adopted by the DU syndicate committee, asking the affiliated institutions not to enroll students having scored less than 120 marks.
Presently, students need to secure 120 marks, out of 200, at the admission test to get admitted into the university's affiliated medical or dental colleges.
"The committee has decided not to relax the existing admission criteria," the university said in a statement adding that the committee also kept the condition of getting 40 marks in the oral test.
Earlier, owners of the country's medical and dental colleges had demanded to reduce the fixed marks by 10 from the existing 120.
Bangladesh Private Medical College Association Treasurer Ikram Hossain Bizu told the FE that because of the high marks for elegibility, almost 40 per cent of the medical seats at the private medical colleges remain vacant every year.
"Considering the issue, we had requested the authorities to review the existing admission criteria, but they have disappointed us," Mr Bizu said. The association leader said there are around 6,500 seats in all of the 50 private medical and dental colleges in the country.
