The Dhaka University (DU) authorities on Wednesday announced a Tk8.10 billion (Tk810.42 crore) budget for the fiscal year (FY) 2019-20 at its annual senate conference, held at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban on the DU campus.
The senate proposed the budget for the next fiscal year during its annual conference where Treasurer Prof Dr Md Kamal Uddin placed the budget with DU Vice-Chancellor and Senate Chairman Prof Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman in the chair.
According to the new budget, the university will spend 31.65 per cent of the budget outlay for payment of wages, 24.17 per cent for allowances, 21 19 per cent for the goods and service sector, 1.31 per cent for special grants sector and 21.68 per cent for other sectors.
Under the sector of goods and services, the budget has allocated Tk 408.07 million for research which is 5.04 per cent of the total allocation.
As per the budget, the University Grants Commission will provide nearly Tk6.94 billion and Tk660 million will come from DU's own sources.
The treasurer also presented a Tk7.61 billion (Tk 761.55 crore) revised budget for the 2018-19 fiscal. Last year, the university announced a Tk7.41 billion budget.
Dr Akhtaruzzaman told the conference: "DU will be placed in the world ranking if the budget is like those of the world's best universities."
No crime or disorder will be allowed in the finance sector, he warned.
Senate members discussed the proposed budget and other issues- traffic jam on the campus, digitalisation of the university offices, students' residential problems etc.
This year, five student representatives were also present at the conference.
They are: DUCSU VP Nurul Huq Nur, GS Golam Rabbani and its member Tilottoma Sikder and Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) central president Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury Shovon and its DU president Sanjit Chandra Das- both senate members.
