DU celebrates founding day

The 94th founding anniversary of Dhaka University (DU) was celebrated on Wednesday with much enthusiasm among the students, teachers, officials and alumni.

Marking the day, the university authorities decorated the country's oldest and largest university with colourful lightings,  balloons and festoons.

Besides, the university also hosted a number of events, including rally, research exhibitions, discussions, debates, sports competitions and cultural programme to celebrate the university's founding day.

Foreign affairs adviser to Prime Minister, Dr Gowher Rizvi, inaugurated the day-long function, hoisting the national flag and the university flag in front of the university's administrative building.

Speaking at a discussion on 'Higher Education and Sustainable Development'; Dr Rizvi called upon the university students to equip themselves with cutting-edge schooling to compete with the rest of the world.   

The adviser also urged the university teachers to play their due role in this connection.

DU Vice Chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique chaired the function while Education Secretary Nazrul Islam Khan presented a keynote paper highlighting the university's achievements.

DU Pro-vice Chancellor Prof Dr Shahid Akhter Hossain, Prof Dr Nasreen Ahmed, university teachers' association president Prof Farid Uddin Ahmed, academicians and alumni, among others, took part in the discussion.

On the first day of July in 1921 the University of Dhaka started its journey with Sir P.J. Hartog as its first vice-chancellor.

According to the DU the university started its activities with three faculties, 12 departments, 60 teachers, 877 students and three dormitories for the students.

At present the university has 13 faculties, 74 departments, 10 institutes, 17 dormitories, 3 hostels and more than 38 research centres. The number of students and teachers has risen to about 33,112 and 1,805 respectively.

Presently the University enrols more than 5,800 students, on the basis of merit, in the first year Honours Programme in different departments.

More than 842 Ph.D. and 673 M.Phil researchers have obtained their degrees from this university.
