The centenary monument at Mall Chattar on the Dhaka University campus is nearing completion amid student outcry.

Some 99 per cent work on the project, which was inaugurated on 18 December 2022, has already been completed, DU authorities say.

Since the beginning of the project, students raised a question whether there was really any necessity for this.

They alleged that the DU authorities had so many other things to work on.

Many students were outraged at the construction of monument in the green natural environment of Mall Chattar.

However, the authorities say the place will be beautified without harming the environment.

The monument is being built to commemorate the centenary of Dhaka University.

The installation will house 100 lamps and construct 20 history panels to mark the university's glorious centenary.

According to the authority, there will be facilities, including student seating, cycle stand, recycle bin and charging point.

The construction cost of the 70ft length, 30ft width and 25ft high centenary monument is around Tk 21 crore.

"The monument will be built by incorporating the glorious history, tradition, achievements, basic philosophy and values of the university," Former Vice-Chancellor Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman said earlier.

DU Professor Dr Muhammed Tanjimuddin Khan of International Relations questioned what can we say about these types of issues? "The university authorities took up such a project without any planning with us."

Ismail Nahid, a student of the mass communication and journalism department at DU, remembers his memory of Mall Chattar.

Nazmus Sakib, a student of French language, also remembers the days when he wakes up early in the morning and goes to class with his eyes drooping, his mind would be refreshed by the greenery. Tamzid, a student of linguistic department, said the Mall Chattar was better than what it was before.

However, some changes were made in the design only after Professor ASM Maqsud Kamal was appointed as the new vice-chancellor. Prof Maqsud Kamal thinks that there was no place then in Mall area for students to sit.
