DU had immense contribution to creating nation: Speakers

Speakers discussed glorious history and past of Dhaka University (DU) at a meeting held on Thursday in connection with celebrations of hundred years of the DU and the golden jubilee of the country's independence.
Presided over by Professor Emeritus Serajul Islam Choudhury, the meeting was addressed by Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam, former vice-president (VP) of DU Central Students' Union (DUCSU) Mujahidul Islam Selim, Editor of The Daily Observer and former media and information affairs adviser to the Prime Minister Iqbal Sobhan Choudhury and Bangladesh Open University Vice-Chancellor Prof Syed Humayun Akhter.
Besides, Vice-Chancellor of Calcutta University Professor Dr Sonali Chakravarty Bandopadhyay also spoke at the discussion as the guest of honour.
Law Minister Anisul Huq stated the glorious past and history of the DU.
He said that DU teachers and students led all democratic struggles, including the '52 Language Movement, 19971 Liberation War, the anti-dictatorship movement, women's awakening and women's education and other movements of the country.
Not only that, the DU had an enormous contribution to create the nation and the country, he noted.
He urged the students to uphold the history and heritage of the university.
Daily Observer Editor Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury said, DU is the cradle of all democratic and political movements in the country.
This university not only plays a role in spreading knowledge and education but also makes unique contributions to the overall development of the country, he added.
Calcutta University VC Prof Sonali Chakravarty said, "From the very beginning, there is a spiritual relation between Dhaka University and Calcutta University."
The DU has set a shining example in the practice of science-technology and all development fields of the country, she mentioned.
Prof Serajul Islam Choudhury said, "DU is our mother institution. This university always shows the way to liberation. We have learnt the education of socialism, democracy and secularism from this university."
