A day-long seminar titled "Contemporary Language Practice in Bangladesh" was held at Dhaka University (DU) RC Majumdar Arts Auditorium on Thursday.
The Department of Linguistics of DU organised the seminar.
DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr ASM Maksud Kamal inaugurated the seminar as the chief guest.
Highlighting the global economic impact on language, the VC said, "People adopt other languages in the urge of life and livelihood and gradually lose their hold on their own language."
In order to expand one's own mother tongue, he emphasised economic development of the country along with pure language practice.
The VC called upon the teachers, researchers and stakeholders to work in unison to promote practice of the mother tongue.
Renowned linguists delivered lectures in three sessions at the day-long seminar.
