DU, JU mark Victory Day with great fervour

The Great Victory Day was celebrate4d at Dhaka University on Tuesday through a variety of programmes by the university administration, DUCSU, and different student organisations throughout the day.

On this occasion, the national flag was hoisted early in the morning at the Vice-Chancellor's Building and on the premises other important establishments.

Led by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Niaz Ahmed Khan, teachers, students, officers and employees of the university paid tributes to the martyrs by placing wreaths at the National Martyrs' Memorial in Savar.

Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr Saima Haque Bidisha, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Dr Mamun Ahmed, Treasurer Professor Dr M Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Proctor Professor Saifuddin Ahmed, along with teachers, students, officers and staff members, were present at the programme.

As part of the celebrations, the administration organised Liberation War-themed art exhibitions, film screenings and documentary shows at different residential halls. Important campus landmarks, including the Arts Building, Curzon Hall, the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) and Smriti Chirantan, were illuminated in the evening.

A cultural programme was held at 5:45pm at the TSC auditorium, jointly organised by the Department of Music, the Department of Dance, and the Department of Theatre and Performance Studies.

DUCSU and student organisations' programmes

On Victory Day, DUCSU and various student, social and cultural organisations active on campus also paid tributes by placing wreaths at the National Martyrs' Memorial in Savar.

DUCSU organised a bicycle rally in the afternoon, while different competitions were arranged at the hall level.

Marking the day, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal brought out a flag procession at 2:30pm from in front of the BNP office at Nayapaltan. The procession passed through Doel Chattar, the Central Shaheed Minar and the TSC before ending at Shahbagh. Leaders and activists from the central committee as well as the metropolitan and university units were present in the rally.

In the evening, Islami Chhatra Shibir organised a seminar titled "54 Years of Victory: Building the Future in the Light of Independence" at 6:00pm at the auditorium of the Sirajul Islam Lecture Theatre Building.

The NCP-affiliated student organisation Jatiya Chhatra Shakti arranged a Liberation War documentary screening in the Bot Tola area of Dhaka University. Later in the evening, at 6:00pm, the organisation also hosted a "Victory Concert" at Aparajeyo Bangla.

Besides, Jahangirnagar University (JU) marked the Great Victory Day on Tuesday with due solemnity and a series of programmes, as Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan called upon all to place the country and the welfare of the people above all else.

Paying tributes to the martyrs of the Liberation War at the National Martyrs' Memorial in the morning, the VC said Victory Day symbolises the nation's liberation, independence and identity.

"On this Victory Day, our collective pledge must be to prioritise the country and the welfare of the people, remain united in safeguarding the country's sovereignty, and build a just, discrimination-free Bangladesh," he added.

The day's programme began at 6:33 am with the hoisting of the national flag at the new administrative building by Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) Prof Dr Mohammad Mahfuzur Rahman, while Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Prof Dr Sohel Ahmed hoisted the university flag.

Acting Registrar Dr ABM Azizur Rahman, along with teachers and officials, was present at the ceremony.

At around 8:00 am, the VC, along with the two pro-vice chancellors, Treasurer Prof Dr Md Abdur Rob, deans of various faculties, the acting registrar, proctor, provosts of residential halls, teachers, students, officers and staff members, paid homage to the martyrs of the Liberation War.

Following the VC's tributes, representatives of the Teachers' Association, Women's Club, Jahangirnagar University Central Students' Union (JUCSU), along with leaders of different student and professional organisations, also placed wreaths at the memorial.

As part of the celebrations, JUCSU organised a Victory Rally and a Liberation War-themed art and painting exhibition at 10:00 am. Earlier in the morning, a 7.5-kilometre 'Victory Day Run' was held under the initiative of JUCSU Sports Secretary Mahamudul Hasan Kiran.

At 10:30 am, the Vice-Chancellor Cup Women's Handball Tournament was held at the central playground. In the final match, Begum Sufia Kamal Hall defeated Nawab Faizunnesa Hall by 5-3 goals to clinch the title. The VC distributed prizes among the winners.

Cultural programmes were held in the evening at Selim Al Deen Mukta Mancha, organised by the Student-Teacher Centre and the Student Welfare and Counselling Centre. In addition, Special meals were also served at the residential halls on the occasion.
