DU mulling relaxing English department admission criteria

The Dhaka University (DU) authority is considering relaxing the existing terms and conditions for admission eligibility at its English department as almost cent per cent students failed to obtain required scores.

According to the admission circular, to study in this subject, the aspirants must secure at least 20 marks out of 30 individually in General English and 15 marks also out of 30 in Elective English.

However, having analysed the results of 'Kha' Unit admission test under the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, only two aspirants, out of nearly 42,000 candidates, were found to have met the criteria for admission at English department although it has 150 seats for the academic session 2014-2015.

"The academic committee meeting of the department has decided to bring relaxation in the conditions for admission," said Associate Prof Ahmed Bashir, who attended the policy-making body meet.

Mr Bashir said the committee has sent a proposal to the central admission committee to relax the criteria to get required students for admission under the department.

Another teacher of the same department told the FE that their proposal includes eliminating the condition of scoring 15 marks in the Elective English part which was introduced this year for the first time.

"Some 17 candidates attempted the Elective English part, but only two of them came out successful according to the criterion," he said.

Echoing the same voice, convener of the 'Kha' Unit admission test Dr Sadrul Amin said they are considering minimising the admission conditions of the department as almost hundred per cent students could not meet the criteria.

Dr Amin, also the Faculty Dean and a senior professor of the department, said following the frustrating admission results they have discussed the issue with the respective academia to find out an effective solution to the unwanted crisis.

The professor, however, assured that all seats of the department will be fulfilled by the candidates who have attended the written test.
